Simple Acai Bowl Nourishing Benefits
Beyond the beauty and and the simplicity let talk about the nourishing benefits. Açai berries are called a superfood by health experts. Simple Açai bowl recipe contains both antioxidants and probiotics. These words can be thrown around in the “health” community as good for us, but I want you to understand why they are so beneficial.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables as well as nuts, whole grains and some meats, poultry and fish. Açai berry contain very high level antioxidants. Antioxidants target free radicals in our body. When oxygen is metabolised, it creates unstable molecules, this is called a free radical. It is a naturally occurring process that about 5% of the oxygen we breath becomes a free radicals. The issue for us is when free radicals build up. This can cause damage to cell membranes, lipids, proteins and even DNA . Antioxidants neutralise these free radicals and support to reduce cholesterol, and help fight a range of diseases including cardiovascular disease. (see references 1, 2 for above paragraph). To me just knowing that I can add nourishing elements to food is empowering. Açai bowls are a simple dish and at the same time so nutrient rich!
Probiotics
The yoghurt or milk kefir contained in this quick and easy smoothie bowl accounts for countless probiotics we can digest. Choose all natural, locally sourced, full fat greek yoghurt to boost these healthy probiotics and ensure there is no added sugar to your morning meal. Milk Kefir will up your probiotic consumption even more. I love Farmhouse on Boone’s Milk Kefir recipe and smoothie ideas. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that assist in creating a good gut microbiome Healthy gut microbiome is essential for maintaining overall health and support in preventing or fighting conditions such as IBS or leaky gut syndrome.
naturally sweet and sugar free
Açai berries are low on the glycemic index meaning they are sweet to taste but won’t impact your blood sugar levels in the same way as other fruits which are much higher in natural sugar. Keeping our natural and processed sugars low is an effective way to lower inflammations throughout our body!
Simple ways to Target your health
Add in collagen, leafy greens, or healthy fats like avocado or nuts to target specific nutrients in our diet. We may need to supplement certain nutrients at times and smoothie bowls offer opportunity to “hide” these additions amongst refreshing fruity flavours.
